1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner SGC 10 Poor 1.
"There is something Lincolnesque about him," Pulitzer Prize-winning sports journalist Arthur Daley once wrote, "his rugged homeliness, his simplicity, his integrity, and his true nobility of character." Hall of Fame manager John McGraw considered him the greatest ballplayer of all time, and Ty Cobb recalled him as the one man he couldn't intimidate. Yet despite the universal high praise from friends and foes, and his membership in the 1936 inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Honus Wagner is best remembered today as the face on the most valuable and coveted of all baseball cards.
While there is some truth to the argument that Wagner's greatness plays a role in the importance of this ultimate collecting rarity, one must acknowledge that it's a supporting role only. An equal print run to contemporaries like Cobb, Young and Mathewson would almost certainly have found Wagner's value equivalent to those legends' as well. But it was Wagner's refusal of the American Tobacco Company's request for permission to use his image that set him apart and above.
The most popular story to explain this refusal is that Wagner wished to play no role in the promotion of the use of tobacco, though it has been justly stated that he was himself a user, and had appeared in advertisements for many tobacco products previously. Another theory notes Wagner's reputation as a fierce negotiator, arguing that it was nothing more than a case of a failure to agree upon a dollar figure that led the ATC to end production of Wagner's card almost as soon as it started.
This unsolved mystery has only served to further enhance the mystique of the treasure presented here, one of just a few dozen examples of the famed Honus Wagner T206 known to exist. A colorized version of a studio portrait by celebrated early baseball photographer Carl Horn er, the unmistakable image on the card face finds the superstar shortstop gazing into the middle distance, set

1909-11 T206 Eddie Plank SGC 40 VG 3.
Like a schoolboy in fond imitation of his older brother, the T206 Plank hits all the same notes as the fabled Wagner, likewise troubling generations of collectors working to compile a complete set of this most beloved of tobacco issues. Theories for the scarcity of this card paying tribute to Connie Mack's superstar southpaw are identical to the Wagner tales, with aversion to tobacco advertisement and contractual stalemate with the American Tobacco Company the most commonly referenced causes. Recognized baseball card census figures find the populations of these two cards well within striking distance of one another.
Though "Gettysburg Eddie" will probably never dethrone his Pirates contemporary as the key card in the T206 set, the presented example within this auction finds the former in considerably superior condition. Graded VG by the experts at SGC, the proffered Plank exhibits only mild corner rounding to suggest its age, with the face remaining clean and well-placed within its four borders. Of fourteen examples to have been holstered within an SGC capsule, just four have been deemed superior to this one. With the Plank, the Wagner and the super-tough Magie error card each presented within this auction, one determined collector could clear the three toughest hurdles laid by this classic set in an afternoon, and spend the ensuing months enjoying the slow, steady jog to the finish line.

1952 Topps Baseball Complete Set (407).
The undisputed king of the post-war era, this first great Topps baseball set joins the T206 tobacco issue and the 1933 Goudey set to comprise the hobby's "Big Three." Fantastic condition throughout establishes this as one of the finer complete sets to reach the auction block in recent memory. 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5.
Argue all you'd like that the 1952 Topps card is Mickey's true rookie - our calendar tells us that the '51 Bowman was actually the first. We'll also take issue with anybody who claims the Topps rookie is a prettier card, as we're of the opinion that Bowman's designs of the early 1950's represent one of the high water marks in cardboard aesthetics. It surely shows on the flawlessly registered image of the nineteen-year old legend in the making, who stands at batting attention before a cloud-dappled sky on this high-grade rarity. Educated collectors will understand the difficulty in achieving a grade of SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5 on any 1951 Bowman, particularly those from the high-number series, which is led off by the Mick. Centering problems abound in this issue, and gum and wax stains are all but epidemic. Our offering is spared the brunt of such ailments, and takes it a step further by sporting four sharp corners and color. Any "flaws" are so minor as to risk overstatement with a mere mention. In short, this one's a real blazer. Of 180 such cards graded by SGC at the time of this writing, the population report tells us that collectors must chase down one of just three cards on earth if they wish to upgrade from an SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. Suffice it to say that finding one of the three cards that top this one will be a difficult ordeal. A tremendous NM/MT+ example of one of the most popular players to ever cross the white base lines.

1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings Trade Card PSA Authentic.
A fitting opening lot for this May 2008 Signature Sports auction is the artifact widely considered by hobbyists to be the very first baseball card ever produced. Issued just four years after General Lee surrendered his Confederate troops at the Appomattox Courthouse to bring a close to the American Civil War, this trade card began a tradition that now approaches its one hundred fortieth birthday. Even dismissing its status as the first true baseball card, this fantastically scarce relic would rank as one of the greatest treasures of the early game, providing a magnificent team photograph of the "Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati," the game's first professional team. Second and third from left in the top and bottom rows respectively are George and Harry Wright, the pioneering brothers whose contributions to the development of the sport are far too numerous to recount here. This Hall of Fame pair and eight other members of this historic club are identified by surname and position at the bottom border. The verso features advertising for "The New York City Base Ball and Sportsman's Emporium, one of two known variations of this large format Peck & Snyder. A caricature of a bearded ballplayer assumes the central focus. Minor border trimming must be noted, though this is commonly seen in the few known surviving examples, and the visual effect of this modification is minimal. Otherwise the condition is quite remarkable, with just a half-inch wrinkle at the left border and some very light staining on verso to mention. A rare and exciting opportunity for the advanced collector.

Long before Joe met Marilyn, he carved a path that Ted Williams would later follow; starting his glorious baseball career on the West coast in the Pacific Coast League. Amazingly, as a member of the San Francisco Seals, DiMaggio had a 61-game hitting streak; surpassing even his ML record of 56 straight games with a hit. One of his two cards from the set (the other shows him throwing), both are extremely difficult to find in any condition and it is exceedingly rare to find with the coupon still intact.

The inside of the wrapper combines a color photo and facsimile autograph with a comic-style presentation of the player's career highlights. Some of the lesser known players are listed for $200 a piece, while the Nolan Ryan lists for $3,500 in NM condition. With every comic graded by PSA, here is a golden opportunity to own the entire set in high grade. Highlights include:

1911 E94 Close Candy Ty Cobb PSA EX 5.
UPDATE: Please note that the white discoloration apparent on Cobb's lower left torso is a defect in the PSA holder, not upon the card itself. Should the winning bidder desire, Heritage will have the card reslabbed after the auction.
Identical in design to the E93 Standard Caramel card likewise presented within this auction, this one provides a green background for the Georgia Peach instead, one of seven color combinations seen within the issue. It's also noteworthy that the Close cards were issued with eleven back variations--ten with overprinting featuring the various candy products marketed by Close, and the eleventh with only the original checklist. Here we encounter that eleventh format. Typical edge wear is the only apparent fault, as the color and registration is wonderful, and even the centering is well within the acceptable range. One of just three Cobbs to rate an EX 5, with only two grading higher.

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 SGC 88 NM/MT 8.
The essence of the Depression-era game, distilled into a single three-inch tall slab of cardboard. The details of the offering are little more than a long list of superlatives, as the set, the player it pictures, and the condition of the card specifically all rank at the pinnacle of the hobby. Joining the 1909-11 T206 and 1952 Topps issues to form the baseball card collecting's "Big Three," the 1933 Goudey set is rightfully considered a consummate masterpiece, with gorgeous portraiture capturing many of the greatest names of the pre-war era. And certainly there was none greater than Babe Ruth, who strikes his classic batting pose here on what may be the set's most recognizable card. Brilliant color and flawless registration brings the Babe to life almost three-quarters of a century after issue, and a stunning absence of wear defies all logic. A minor southern shift in centering and the slightest corner touches are all we can report when pressed to find any variation from utter perfection, and it's little surprise that only two representations have ever risen higher on the SGC population charts.

1967 Topps Nutty Initial Stickers Original Art (30).
In 1967 Norman Saunders was hired to paint the "Love Letters" series for Topps and he proposed a new idea for a different alphabet series based on these twisted creatures, which are contorted into letter shapes that came to be known as Nutty Initial Stickers. Here we offer the original art for the set, which includes the entire alphabet as well as (4) symbols with the only missing art being the exclamation point. All of the images are designed and painted by Norman Saunders. Their phenomenal display character illustrates the care that was expended in the issue's planning and composing, and every one demonstrates concerted, painstaking artistry. Each hand-painted artwork measures about 4.5" x 3.5". Further, each has the expected, paste-up adhesive residue on the reverse. All of the artworks are extraordinarily vivid in color and detail, and all reflect minimally Near Mint preservation in their subject drawings.

1954 Topps Hank Aaron Rookie #128 PSA Mint 9.
Certainly one of the hobby's most important post-war cards, a status it will retain even now that Aaron's remarkable 755 career home run total has been surpassed. Though Aaron's own assumption of the home run crown came more than a quarter century after Jackie Robinson broke the color line, Hammerin' Hank was forced to endure everything from racist taunts to death threats as he reeled in the Babe. This exceptional Mint example of his 1954 Topps rookie card is a fitting tribute to the skill and bravery of history's most prolific slugger, remaining to this day entirely unchanged from its emergence from a wax pack over a half century ago. Offering perfect color, registration and centering to go along with its complete absence of wear, it is not surprising that this card finds itself near the top of the record books (much like the man himself) with only two specimens ever grading higher.

1953 Topps Mickey Mantle #82 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5.
Full bleed color at the lower left corner is the fly in the ointment for most cards from this second great Topps Baseball issue, but this remarkable specimen dodges that pitfall most admirably, providing the look of a card straight out of Eisenhower-era wax. The magic isn't confined solely to that southwest corner though, as a more expansive investigation finds marvelous centering, first-rate color and registration, and corners as sharp as a Mantle line drive. It's no surprise that the featured lot finds itself in the rarest of company, with just three competitors ever charting higher on the SGC population report.

The 1960 Topps issue was the last year that Topps produced a horizontal issue and has always been a collector favorite due to its multiple Hall of famers along with its colorful design. Sets like this do not come around to often, especially where more than 28% of the set has already been graded at the NM/MT level or higher, including 3 GEM MINT cards. 1911 Bishop & Co. PCL Type 1 (E100) Collection (2).
The cards from this seldom-seen set were issued by the confectioner Bishop & Co. of Los Angeles, which had produced a similar set a year earlier. Both sets showcased star players from the Pacific Coast League. The Buck Weaver card (SGC 50 VG/EX 4) has near perfect centering, tremendous color and rarity. Buck Weaver was one of the most popular "Black Sox" of the 1919 team and his cards have the tendency of selling for more than Hall of Famers of this era, due to his popularity and the lack of cards that are available in the market. The Delmas card (SGC 40 VG 3) presents strong with nice centering, color and rarity.

The Finest Signed 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 PSA VG-EX 4.
The most important and sought after of all post-ward cards is blessed by the hand of the gentleman who established it as such. This coveted rookie from the first great Topps issue finds only typical corner wear and a mild eastward shift in centering to suggest anything other than cardboard perfection, as the color and registration are first rate. Mantle's blue ink signature is likewise unimprovable, helping to establish this offering as one of the most attractive and valuable Mantle signed artifacts in the hobby.

1909-11 T206 Sherry Magee (Magie) Error Card SGC 30 Good 2.
To give some idea of the incredible scarcity of this important tobacco card, we'll note that only twenty-five have ever been encapsulated by the SGC grading service, just over four times as many as the six representations of the famed Honus Wagner card, considered one of the rarest pieces of cardboard on earth. Severely abridged print runs are the common thread that causes the skimpiest of supplies of each, as Wagner personally put a stop to his own appearance in the set, and the misspelling of Magee's last name was caught and corrected early in the process. Even the most advanced collections of T206 sets are often short of the coveted "Magie," and so we expect spirited bidding for this nice example. Typical corner rounding is the only noteworthy condition issue, as the surfaces present as well as a card of much loftier rank.

The first line of his cardback biography summarizes the legendary ballplayer's greatness. "Home run king of the big leagues." As tribute to his sovereignty, Ruth's likeness was featured on four different 1933 Goudey cards. It would be nearly impossible to find a finer specimen, as only one of the 126 reviewed by SGC has received a higher mark. Centering is above the norm; with four strong corners, a clean front and back, and colors that radiate. A few stray printing lines are all that separate this card from even a higher grade.

1921 Koester Bread George Ruth SGC 80 EX/NM 6.
The first ever New York City "Subway Series" was the catalyst in giving birth to this exceedingly scarce issue, distributed in October 1921 by New York bakery "E.H. Koester" to celebrate the occasion. The issue made use of the New York Giants and Yankees images from the American Caramel Series of 120 (E121), and added a few more besides. These blank-backed cards are considerably more rare than the E121's, however, and the New York connection makes this Babe Ruth specimen a particular treasure. The fine condition is practically overkill here, with light corner wear the main factor in establishing the EX/MT rating. Only one other example has ever graded higher.

card finds Cobb demonstrating his mastery with the lumber that made him one of just two men in history to reach the magical 4,000 hit mark. Only nine examples of this card have ever been encapsulated by PSA in any grade, and just a single one of them has surpassed this Mint marvel. The lightest of corner touches and a light vertical print line seem to be all that keeps it from sharing the top spot. 1963 Topps Pete Rose Rookie #537 SGC 96 Mint 9.
Though the disembodied head design may not win any awards from the judging panel, the magnificent condition of the offered specimen most assuredly will. The full-bleed blue header is merciless when it comes to wear, and a stiff breeze can knock a Rose rookie off the mark in a heartbeat. This Mint example is absent the typical white spots at the edges and corners, and provides marvelous centering and registration besides. When paired with the tremendous historical relevance attached to a card that heralded the arrival of the eventual Hit King, the appeal is as clear as can be. One of just five cards to achieve this lofty mark on the SGC population charts, with none ever ascending higher.

1921 E121 American Caramel Ty Cobb, Manager on Front Series Of 80 PSA EX-MT 6.
This card is extracted from the scarce American Caramel Series of 80 (E121) set issued in 1921. The baseball careers of Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth overlapped 14 seasons (1914-28), and the older Cobb was reluctant to let go of his supremacy in the game as it transformed from the dead-ball era to the more modern home-run era. Only four PSA examples have been graded at this EX-MT level with only two others attaining higher status. An nicely graded EX-MT card.

1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle Rookie #253 PSA NM 7.
The fabulous portraiture that characterizes the early 1950's Bowman sets joins with the supreme relevance of this iconic star's debut to create one of the most desired and essential cards of the post-war era. The card's appearance in the short-printed high-number series only adds to its scarcity and mystique, with collectors battling fiercely for quality examples such as that which we present here. This issue is known for centering problems and wax stains, but our offering is spared the brunt of such ailments, with the lightest of corner touches all that prevents it from soaring even higher. Only fifty-six unqualified specimens have ever graded higher.

1909-11 T206 Ray Demmitt St. Louis PSA VG-EX 4.
A December 1909 trade of this frankly mediocre outfield talent from the New York Highlanders to the St. Louis Browns has served to give Demmitt a value quite disproportionate to his baseball importance. The updated "St. Louis Americans" caption and "St. L" on his chest make this a rare variation, only offered within packs of "Polar Bear" cigarettes. Only a single example of this ultra-tough card has ever ascended higher on the PSA population charts. An exciting opportunity for the advanced tobacco card collector.
