Description

1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings Trade Card PSA Authentic. A fitting opening lot for this May 2008 Signature Sports auction is the artifact widely considered by hobbyists to be the very first baseball card ever produced. Issued just four years after General Lee surrendered his Confederate troops at the Appomattox Courthouse to bring a close to the American Civil War, this trade card began a tradition that now approaches its one hundred fortieth birthday. Even dismissing its status as the first true baseball card, this fantastically scarce relic would rank as one of the greatest treasures of the early game, providing a magnificent team photograph of the "Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati," the game's first professional team. Second and third from left in the top and bottom rows respectively are George and Harry Wright, the pioneering brothers whose contributions to the development of the sport are far too numerous to recount here. This Hall of Fame pair and eight other members of this historic club are identified by surname and position at the bottom border. The verso features advertising for "The New York City Base Ball and Sportsman's Emporium, one of two known variations of this large format Peck & Snyder. A caricature of a bearded ballplayer assumes the central focus. Minor border trimming must be noted, though this is commonly seen in the few known surviving examples, and the visual effect of this modification is minimal. Otherwise the condition is quite remarkable, with just a half-inch wrinkle at the left border and some very light staining on verso to mention. A rare and exciting opportunity for the advanced collector.
