Description
Circa 1941 Joe "Ducky" Medwick Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jacket. An exceptionally rare pre-war uniform piece provides tremendous appeal on a number of levels. Notably, it is the first such example we have ever encountered in the collecting hobby, a fine "letterman style" jacket with a Dodger blue wool body and white suede sleeves. Heritage auctioned a very similar St. Louis Browns jacket in our May 2007 auction (Lot 19421), with matching "King Sportswear Company" tagging in the collar and chenille logo patch over heart and numeral patches at lower left sleeve, but we've never seen the Dodgers model before. Our research determines that the style was utilized between the late 1930's and early 1940's, and a photograph located at www.GettyImages.com (enter number "50607905" into the search field) finds one Dodger wearing the style at far right of the 1939 image.But compounding the desirability as a newly discovered and highly collectible style is the jacket's original ownership. The number "77" chenille patches applied just above the left sleeve cuff represent digits worn by only two players in Dodgers history. Coach Chuck Dressen briefly took on the double-sevens in 1940, and is listed in Baseball Reference at a diminutive 5'5" tall, 146 pounds. Joe Medwick is documented as having worn the number "77" in both 1940 and the 1941 National League Championship season, charting a far more substantial 5'10", 187 pounds. The size "44" label in the jacket and the fact that the jacket comfortably fits our 6'5", 205 pound cataloger with some room to spare would strongly indicate usage by the latter. According to our database of auction house results, this jacket would join a pair of 1944 New York Giants pants as the only uniform pieces worn by the Hall of Fame former Gashouse Gangster to surface at public auction in the past decade.
The jacket was originally sourced from a family whose patriarch had been a bat boy for the Dodgers just prior to the Second World War. The jacket was stored for decades in a steamer trunk and presents today in remarkably fine condition as a result, with some apparent tobacco juice staining on the right sleeve the only issue that distracts the eye. The front zipper still functions perfectly. Jacket was acquired along with a matching period Brooklyn Dodgers cap which is presented in the Heritage Sunday Internet Sports Auction closing April 25th.
