Description
Circa 1936 Carl Hubbell Game Worn Jacket. Teammates can also be fans, as was clearly the case with Jim Sheehan, who was starstruck during his brief tenure with the New York Giants by superstar hurler Carl Hubbell. A letter of provenance from Sheehan's son notes how this single-game veteran (September 26, 1936) of the Bigs managed to acquire a game worn jersey and jacket once belonging to Hubbell, each of which was sold to our consignor in February of this year. Presented is the latter. The classic styling is apparent in photography dating from 1932 to 1941 (see www.GettyImages.com #1929352 for an image of John McGraw in a similar jacket), allowing us to pinpoint Hubbell's ownership to some time between the style's first appearance and its acquisition by Sheehan."Giants" is spelled across the chest in red and white felt, and three of the original seven buttons on the chest remain. Patriotic red, white and blue elasticized ribbing at collar and waist exhibit expected wear, but the navy wool body remains in splendid condition for its age. "Freeman Mfg." label appears at interior pocket. There is no size tag inside, but the jacket measures twenty-six inches across the chest, proper for Hubbell's 6'1", 170 frame.
Beyond the letter of provenance, ownership by Hubbell is proven by an ancient number "11" penned at interior of the elasticized collar, barely clinging to legibility but clearly vintage. The experts at MEARS likewise provide their seal of approval, assigning a label of "Authentic" to this scarce and desirable artifact likely worn during the glorious World Championship season of 1936 at a minimum.
