Description
1904 Boston Red Sox Photographic Composite by Carl Horner. Please note, as is apparent in the catalog imagery, that player identifications appear in period ink. From the same consignor providing this auction with the previous Horner composite dedicated to the losing team in the first World Series contest comes this equally spectacular specimen dedicated to the victors. In every regard of dimension, design and condition it mirrors that of its National League companion, trading only the personnel and identifiers for those who prefer the company of iconic moundsman Cy Young to that of the turn of the century's most illustrious shortstop Honus Wagner. The Red Sox had been betting underdogs in this historic first Fall Classic, with the American League seen as an inferior upstart in much the same way the American Football League was considered in the mid-1960's before Joe Namath's Super Bowl III guarantee was fulfilled. Much credit for the Sox' victory was later handed to Nuf Ced McGreevy's "Royal Rooters," whose loud singing and catcalls from the grandstand rattled Honus Wagner to such a degree that he would commit six errors and bat just six for twenty-seven. "I was a joke in that Boston-Pittsburg Series," Wagner would later admit. "What does it profit a man to hammer along and make a few hits when they are not needed only to fall down when it comes to a pinch?"
If there is any difference between the Boston and the Pittsburg model it would be a slightly more prominent degree of dampstaining here, though once again it must be stressed that it also remains 100% clear of the composite itself. It is not even troubling enough that a replacement mat would be advised, though that would be a simple option in order to move the piece that much closer to perfection. As always, we would recommend viewing our online imagery to gain a close-up view of the piece that will hide no defect, though there is very little to hide. These matching composites were displayed at the Cleveland National Sports Collectors Convention this year, where they were among the most talked about and coveted pieces in the Heritage display. They will serve the same function in your private trophy room. Third party shipping is required.
