Description
1869-70 Cincinnati Red Stockings Schedule & Scoresheet. Monumentally significant four-page pamphlet was issued at some point between the 1869 and 1870 Cincinnati Red Stockings seasons, the first in the history of professional baseball. It was a team composed of ten salaried players, most notably Harry Wright and his brother George, each members of the Baseball Hall of Fame's pioneer wing, and certainly two of the most talented players of their early time. Despite the club's dominance over such competition as the Mutuals and Atlantics of New York and Ivy League giants Harvard and Yale, declining ticket sales forced the dissolution of the club following the 1870 season, and Harry Wright was hired to organize a new ball club in 1871, the Boston Red Stockings, today known as the Atlanta Braves.Composed of a medium stock sheet of 8.5x11" paper folded at center to form a four-page pamphlet, the ancient document announces "Red Stocking Tours and Games for 1869 and 1870" on the cover, and opens to reveal a center spread with printed results for the 1869 season and the schedule for the games of 1870, with blanks for the scores which have been faithfully filled in with bold pencil writing. Scores of 56 to 13 and 74 to 19 indicate that these were no "pitchers' duels, though, unbelievably, one contest with the Brooklyn Atlantics did end in an eleven inning 7 to 8 loss. The back page is an advertisement for George Ellard's sporting goods emporium, announcing a stock of everything from fireworks to "Baseball Goods."
While a degree of wear should be clearly evident in our catalog imagery, one will also be struck by how relatively inconsequential it is. Aside from the spine fold as issued, there are two horizontal folds equally spaced, garnered from years of storage folded into thirds. Some short points of separation at the intersection of fold lines do not in any way threaten the integrity of the piece. One really could not hope for much better considering the age and the absolute miracle of mere existence. Certainly one of the most exciting artifacts to hit the auction block for collectors and historians with a concentration in the origins of our National Pastime.
