Description

1915 Duke Kahanamoku Swimming Winner's Medal. Best remembered today as "The Father of Surfing," this native Hawaiian first entered the public consciousness as the greatest swimmer the world had ever seen. In August 1911, at an amateur swim meet, Kahanamoku was timed at 55.4 seconds in the 100 yard freestyle, smashing the existing world record by over four and a half seconds. A year later he would claim the Gold Medal at the Stockholm Summer Olympics in the same event, and then repeat his domination eight years later at the Antwerp Games. Between these Gold Medal performances, the aquatic phenom visited the "Marton Swimming Club" of New Zealand, once again leaving all competitors in the 100 Yard Freestyle in his wake. Gorgeously engraved reverse of the nine-karat gold pendant reads, in full, "Marton Swimming Club - 1st 100 Yds. - 2nd 75 Yds. HCap - Won by Duke Kohanamoku (sic) - 15-3-15." Obverse is elegantly scrolled and features a shield design. Small in stature at a size of .75x1.5", the offered "gold medal" is massive in collecting appeal, and should fuel a spirited bidding war between Olympic and surfing collectors anxious to capitalize upon a very rare opportunity.
