Description
1919 Babe Ruth & Ty Cobb Signed Baseball. One was a gritty, no-nonsense veteran who would end the season as the American League batting champion for the eleventh and final time in his career. The other was a boisterous newcomer who would earn top honors for Junior League long balls as he converted from pitcher to hard-slugging outfielder. These two greatest figures in pre-war Major League Baseball met upon the field of battle on September 18, 1919 as the Red Sox hosted the Detroit Tigers at Boston's Fenway Park. Though this pair would face off twenty-two times a season between Ruth's 1914 debut and Cobb's 1928 retirement, presented is the only dual-signed baseball we've ever encountered from this iconic pair's playing days.The stunning OAL (Johnson) ball is a bona fide miracle of autograph collecting, with each diamond legend providing not only his signature but also the exact date of his autograph's application. Ruth's sweet spot offering is in his eminently desirable early format, rating a black fountain pen ink 6/10. Cobb's side panel offering is perhaps a point stronger still, clearly applied with the same writing instrument. The ball itself is evenly shaded to a delectable tobacco hue, with the ball's stamping retaining every bit of its boldness since its brush with greatness nine decades ago. Though the specific details of the Sox' eight to two loss to the visiting Tigers may have been lost to history, this unlikely survivor will assure that the meeting will be remembered forever in one advanced hobbyist's collection.
