Description
1957 Eddie Mathews Game Worn Milwaukee Braves Jersey. Hall of Fame heritage. World Championship season vintage. Arguably the most beautiful flannel uniform style of its generation. This is a jersey that truly has it all. Like the 1957 Spahn gamer likewise presented within this auction, the offered garment was consigned to Heritage by a gentleman who had been a young boy in Cedar Rapids in the late 1950's, the Iowa town which served as home to a minor league Braves affiliate. Through chance and luck, the boy was an acquaintance of a clubhouse worker for the Cedar Rapids Braves and inquired about the team's Major League hand-me-down jerseys at the close of the local team's season. "Help yourself," came the clubhouse worker's reply. "Take any you'd like." The boy chose well.Mathews' home white flannel survives in 100% original condition, unchanged in appearance from the year the twenty-five year old third baseman posted thirty-two homers and ninety-four runs batted in during the regular season. The gorgeous red and black scripted "Braves" angles across the chest above the classic tomahawk logo, with number "41" just below the heart. Number "41" is repeated on verso. The screaming brave logo patch remains affixed at left sleeve. Interior collar holds embroidered "Mathews" swatch, with 80% of the stitching that affixes the swatch remaining. The "1957" embroidered year swatch in the tail is similarly applied, beneath the proper "Wilson [size] 44" and washing instructions tags. The single flaw is a broken zipper on the front, which could be easily repaired or pinned shut for display.
Could this be the shirt Mathews was wearing when he crushed his Game Four tenth inning walk-off shot to even the Series? Considering the fact that each player was issued two home and two road jerseys during this period, we calculate the odds at an even fifty-fifty. But is it one of the greatest flannel finds of 2010? Our oddsmakers call that a sure thing. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
