Description

1962 Mickey Mantle Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. It's one of the most recognizable images ever created by the great LeRoy Neiman, who has served as the reigning World Champion of sports art for the better part of a half century. The work has been widely reproduced in lithographic and serigraphic format, with these limited edition prints often commanding prices in excess of $10,000. The image was also utilized for the promotional posters and programs at the Yankee Stadium "A Salute to Mickey Mantle" ceremonies on July 28, 1996 (an image of that poster is available on our website, but this poster is not included in the lot). It's unquestionably the most famous painting of the Mick in existence, and there's only one original. This is it.

Created at the pinnacle of Mickey Mantle's enormous talents and fame, the work dates to the 1962 World Championship season for his New York Yankees, signed "LeRoy Neiman '62" at lower right. The Mick wears his home pinstripes as he takes a left handed swing, Neiman's kinetic bursts of color forming a comet's tail of motion. In every respect the oil on board masterpiece is a definitive example of Neiman's modern impressionistic style.

Less than a year short of his ninetieth birthday, Neiman continues to create in his studio at the Hotel des Artistes overlooking New York City's Central Park, but the 1960's and 1970's will forever be considered his golden age. This is the most significant and recognizable Neiman original to reach the public auction block in recent memory, unquestionably one of the the three or four most important works in his oeuvre. It's a piece worthy of a position of honor in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Baseball Hall of Fame, or the finest of private collections. Framed to forty-two inches square. Third party shipping required.
