Description

1910 T210 Old Mill Casey Stengel PSA EX-MT 6. One wonders if those athletes who toiled for the 1950s Yankees or the early 1960s Mets ever had an example of this card to pass around their clubhouse. Those players would have probably enjoyed the sight of their skipper - the "Old Professor" - all dressed up and ready to play for Maysville of the Blue Grass League, those many years before. It's doubtful that this scenario ever took place - the T210 Old Mill tobacco card picturing the Hall of Fame manager is simply too rare - but we can be certain it wouldn't have been this card, in any case.

A much-prized rarity, this example of the minimally distributed memento from the earliest time of Casey Stengel's pro baseball career shows almost no evidence of handling - in a Major League clubhouse, or elsewhere. The hobbyist who has the pleasure of viewing this collectible is treated to the sight of pure, vintage Stengel. Here, Casey is shown prior to his ascent to the big leagues (with Brooklyn), and it would be decades more until he was commanding the likes of DiMaggio, Berra, Mantle ... and Throneberry.

An elite "1 of 1" at its tier with none graded higher, this remarkable piece stands alone at the pinnacle of its scant, five-card PSA census. The card concedes almost no corner wear, as that phrase is generally understood: all four tips retain admirable structural integrity, forming solid right angles, and it's only the full-bleed red that betrays vestiges of flaking at the surfaces of the outermost points. The photographic likeness is riveting in its detail, and the "Old Mill"-branded back design upholds solid quality in its inking.
