Description
1922 E137 Zeenut PCL Jim Thorpe SGC Authentic. Jim Thorpe's exploits on the gridiron have become the stuff of folklore, making it impossible to calculate the ratio of fact to exaggeration, but there is no question that he was the most talented football star of his age. The stories of his halftime drop kick field goals from the fifty yard line to entertain the fans may not be gospel, but his three World Championships with the Canton Bulldogs certainly are, and when the National Football League was founded in 1920, it was Thorpe who was chosen League president by the charter members. Parallels could accurately be drawn between Thorpe and his iconic baseball contemporary Babe Ruth, each a "diamond in the rough," emerging from the reservation and the orphanage respectively, to establish themselves as the greatest talents (and gate attractions) of their day. Each also met his end too soon, as a result of unhealthy living. His tenure with various sports/teams resulted in his appearing on precious trading cards. The offered E137 Zeenut from 1922 depicts the athletic legend with the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League, this was to be his final year Thorpe played in organized baseball. The card has been assessed "Authentic" by SGC for the obvious extra paper adhered to the reverse. The back shows light ink mark and general overall wear. From the front, the card appears at the VG/EX level with faint wrinkling and wear. The central image of Thorp is only minimally visually affected. Of the thousands of E137 Zeenut that were issued between 1911 and 1939 Jim Thorpe remains one of the top ten E137 entries. A must have card that appears in only the most advanced vintage collections.
