Description
1960 Don Meredith Game Worn Dallas Cowboys Rookie Helmet. Acquired at the same time, by the same source, who supplied this auction with the spectacular Don Meredith uniform that follows this lot, the presented "Riddell Kra-Lite" helmet likewise dates to the 1960 season in which both Dandy Don and the Dallas Cowboys made their first NFL appearance. Though our consignor insists that Meredith was so tough that he wore a helmet only because the NFL mandated it, the remarkably flimsy (by modern standards) six-point suspension system surely saved Meredith a few concussions in its day.The suspension is stamped with a proper "7 3/8" size designation, and attribution to Meredith appears in a black marker number "17" over the left interior ear hole and a blue dymo tape "Meredith" applied to the exterior shell between the center striping at rear. The single bar face mask remains in place, a format utilized during the early days before multiple broken noses inspired trainers to seek extra protection for their young star.
Our consignor, a young Cowboys ball boy during the club's infancy, points out the faintly visible remnants of an earlier star application to the exterior shell, explaining how Tex Schramm demanded fastidious gear maintenance. As soon as a decal was damaged, it would be replaced, sometimes slighly off-kilter from earlier incarnations. In this case, the multiple applications ensures solid game wear, adding further appeal. Like the uniform that follows this lot, the presented helmet ranks among the most significant Cowboys collectibles ever to be offered at public sale, so bid accordingly.
