Description

1903-04 E107 Breisch Williams Vic Willis Rookie SGC 20 Fair 1.5. The E107 series was the only comprehensive set of baseball cards to appear between the N300 Mayo Cut Plug series of 1895 and the golden age of 20th Century cards that began in earnest in 1909. Because of when they appeared, the E107 set includes multiple stars of both the 19th and 20th Century eras and many rookie card appearances. The offered rookie card is of Hall of Fame pitcher Vic Willis of the Boston Beaneaters. Willis was a workhorse who made his debut in 1898. During his career, Willis had eight seasons where he won 20 or more games finishing with 249 victories with a surprising 50 by shutout. He appeared in 513 games for a potential 4,617 innings. Willis pitched 3,996 of those innings or 86.5% of his assigned games-for his career! The in-uniform but formal portrait is the work of Carl Horner. This example is one of only six graded by SGC. Soiling, creases and corner wear earn it a SGC 20 FR 1.5 grade. Condition aside, Willis is a Hall of Fame member; this is his card debut and this is one of the most historically significant productions in the hobby. Note that the only known Vic Willis single signed baseball is offered elsewhere in this auction.
