Description
1942 Sugar Ray Robinson Fight Worn Robe. Jake LaMotta dubbed him, "without a doubt the greatest pound for pound fighter that ever lived." And if there was anybody who could attest to the brilliance of this Boxing Hall of Famer, it was "The Raging Bull," who met Robinson in the ring a punishing six times, forfeiting his Middleweight Championship to him in the famous Valentine's Day Massacre of 1951 in their final bout.Presented here is a robe dating to the year of the pair's first contest, one which may well have been worn into the ring that early October evening in New York City. The number "42" in yellow felt over the heart denotes the year, while the "N.Y.G.G." announces "New York Golden Gloves," the amateur tournament Sugar Ray had dominated. Surely, at this early juncture of his career, Robinson would have reused a robe for many appearances, particularly given the frequency of his ring appearances. "Ray Robinson" stands in three-inch block lettering on verso. One letter has become partially unstitched but remains firmly attached. "Davega Golden Gloves" label resides inside collar. Condition is outstanding, with no defects of any concern.
Provenance is ideal, with a letter from Robinson's son, Ray Jr., reading, in part, "The boxing robe described herin was used by my father during his amateur career in the Golden Gloves and during the early part of his professional career which started in 1940...This robe remained in our family from the time it was used by my father until this date when it was sold." LOA from Craig Hamilton. Letter of provenance from Ray Robinson Jr.
Guide Value or Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
