Description

1860's "Champion Tobacco" Box with John Heenan. Absolutely exceptional Civil War era tobacco box would be a treasure worthy of the finest collections even in the absence of its endorsement by the most famous pugilist of the era. The large wooden box, measuring 5x9x11" in size, is a marvel of period design, with golden font spelling "Edmonston & Williamson's Champion Tobacco, 213 & 215 Duane Street, New York" against a royal blue background. On the lid, a heroic eagle soars with a sash reading "The Highest Yet Attained" streaming from his beak. But still, it is when we open the lid to find the design underneath that the greatest appeal of all is revealed. Pictured at center is the famed bare knuckle brawler John C. Heenan, whose historic bout with British Champion Tom Sayers remains one of the most famous matches in boxing history. The first bout to gain the interest of fight fans on both sides of the Atlantic, Heenan vs. Sayers made a hero of both as the fight ended in a bloody draw after more than forty rounds, with Sayers' arm and Heenan's hand broken and each almost blinded by swelling around the eyes. The American and British flags that appear at the four corners of his portrait make obvious reference to this historic bout. Condition is another jewel in the crown, as the box shows just mild wear to the exterior, with nothing that could be appropriately termed damage, and the all-important design on the inner lid in legitimate NRMT condition.
