Description
1939 Rogers Hornsby Signed Baltimore Orioles Payroll Check. A fire on Independence Day, 1944 at Baltimore's Oriole Park destroyed the vast majority of the document archives housed at the ballpark, yet this one survived by the skin of its proverbial teeth, one of only four Hornsby checks to emerge from the flames. The effects of the fire are clearly visible however, from the dark singing of the edges to the very minor bleeding of the ink resulting from the dousing of the blaze, but the check remains complete and entirely legible. It's made payable to Hornsby in the amount of $197, a figure that is noted at far left to cover expenses for meals for the team. The payment is authorized by the team vice president and president, with endorsing signature on the back from Hornsby himself. This signature is very slightly affected by the aforementioned singing and dousing, but still remains quite bold and attractive. Certainly a great conversation piece, with appeal that rivals its great scarcity. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.Auction Info
