1949 Masters Championship Trophy Won by Sam Snead.It's just the second offering of this exquisite style ever presented at auction, the first--earned by Snead for his 1951 dominance of the field at Augusta--commanding $191,200 in the Heritage "Platinum Night" auction at the 2013 National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, Illinois. This thrilling memento of the 1949 tournament represents the first of three Snead victories upon Bobby Jones' hallowed grounds, earned with masterful matching sixty-sevens in the final two rounds to outpace second-place finishers Johnny Bulla and Lloyd Mangrum by a three-stroke margin. A purse of $2,750 and the first winner's Green Jacket ever presented awaited Snead in the clubhouse.
This exacting miniature replica of that building dates to decades later, as the trophies did not exist at the time of Snead's wins and were thus presented retroactively to past champions. The distinctive design of the trophy is an intriguing departure from the standard loving cup format so common in sporting awards, arguably the most visually captivating of the contents of Snead's bulging trophy case. The structure rests atop a sterling silver disk measuring approximately thirteen inches in diameter and set upon a polished wooden base that expands the dimensions slightly. On the edge of the polished silver disk is engraved the text, "Masters Tournament, Augusta National Golf Club, 1949 Sam Snead 282." Fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
