Description
1956-57 Glen Skov Game Worn Jersey. Glen Skov earned his stripes coming up in the junior league ranks as a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization, where he toiled as a standout center from 1946-51. From the end of the 1950-51 season when the Red Wings called him up, Skov was at the National Hockey League level for good, figuring largely in three Stanley Cup winners while representing Hockeytown.Beginning with the 1955-56 season Glen Skov's services became the interest of the Chicago Black Hawks. The beautiful red wool sweater that we present here is from Skov's sophomore season in Chicago and comes with quite a bit of unique flavor. Not only does this jersey carry with it the white "A" over the heart indicating Skov's position of alternate captain, this 1956-57 gamer also marks just the second year of one of the most recognizable uniform designs in all of North American sports.
Founded in 1926 by coffee tycoon Frederic McLaughlin in 1926, the Chicago Black Hawks used a logo from their inception designed by McLaughlin's wife Irene Castle. Up until the 1955 season of Skov's Black Hawks debut, the Indian head logo was significantly smaller and encircled by a ring of black. That means that the beautiful logo on the chest of this Skov gamer remains as one of the only remaining originals. Known for its beauty and attention to detail, the Black Hawks logo seen here is a near flawless exemplar, exhibiting all of the hallmarks this team crest is famous for.
Evidence of wear is extensive, but the use does much to enhance the overall appearance of the jersey as no real condition issues have crept up in the past half-century. An unrepaired hole near the captain's "A" can be observed, yet many of the holes have been fixed by way of team repairs. Two prominent repairs can be seen on the front in the area of the waist striping, with another in the area of the right rear shoulder. Expected wear is also found in the area of the elbows. Jersey's verso includes 10" tall "14" in a white tackle twill, which exhibit the hallmark puckering seen in heavily used sweaters. Original lace from collar is now absent. Interior left seam includes original Lipman's tagging along with size 58 flap tag from Coane in Philadelphia.
Jersey was obtained by our consignor in the 1990s from the legendary Gunzo's Sporting Goods. We cannot overstress the importance of this beautiful second-year design, a style that has remained largely unchanged to this day. An absolute must-have for those looking to amass the comprehensive Black Hawks collection. LOA from MeiGray.
