Description

1934 Tour of Japan Pennant Presented to Joseph Cascarella. No foreign excursion in the history of our National Pastime has been as consequential as the 1934 Tour of Japan, the spark that ignited a wildfire of passion for the game in the Land of the Rising Sun. Due to this unparalleled historical relevance and the extraordinary cast of characters involved, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, the few surviving relics of the Tour are highly coveted by collectors. Here we present a particularly appealing example, a gorgeous felt pennant presented by the grateful host nation to rookie Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Joe Cascarella. Most of the text is in Japanese, but the lucky young hurler's name and the date "1934, November" appear within the design, which features a pairing of the American and Japanese national flags. A Tokyo manufacturer's label is affixed to verso. Length is twenty inches excluding the tassels, width ten inches. Condition is quite strong, with no significant visual distractions. Our records indicate that this is just the second example to surface on the hobby's auction block.
