Description
1914 Boston Garter Joe Jackson SGC 10 Poor 1. There are stars, superstars, Hall of Famers and then there are legends. The saga of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is beyond legend, his saga attaining mythical proportions. Is he revered because we want to believe that "Goliath" is always the bad guy... Is he admired so highly because his humble beginnings afford him a greater degree of understanding... or is it simply because the game's darkest hour managed to engulf the man who was one of the most gifted natural talents ever to step foot onto a baseball diamond? Regardless, Jackson is the undisputed key entry in the extremely rare 12-card Boston Garter window display series from 1914.This marvelous piece captures the essence of the Jackson persona via the intense batting pose of Joe towering god-like above the all-but forgotten earthly product this beauty was designed to promote. The corners show a gentle rounding, the surfaces display a light toning from age but colors remain rich and appealing. Free of any type of restoration or alteration, this crowning achievement to any vintage collection does show the effect of contact with one of nature's little creatures who unwisely decided to make a small portion of stock a hearty snack. From the front, the small opening to the right of Jackson's knee is the most obvious evidence of this dining choice. A slight water mark in the upper right and two small spots of surface chipping along an edge are mentioned for accuracy. The technical grade is the natural result of the mentioned small segment and fails to take into consideration the strong visual appeal offered the viewer. One of only two examples known with a numerical grade, and without that one condition aliment this amazing treasure would rank three or four levels higher, possibly reaching the very good to excellent plateau. Few would argue that the full-color Boston Garter cards are, simply stated, the rarest and most attractive of any baseball series from any era. If afforded to opportunity to acquire any one of the dozen names in the impressive roster, Joe Jackson would receive the nod every time.
