1963 Topps Bob Gibson #415 PSA Gem MT 10 - Pop One-of-One Condition Rarity! One of the fiercest competitors in the game's long history, Bob Gibson once explained "I've played a couple of hundred games of tic-tac-toe with my little daughter and she hasn't beaten me yet. I've always had to win. I've got to win." And win he did. Gibson represents the last of his breed of tough, durable pitchers who didn't rely on a relief pitcher. In his 528 appearances, 255 were complete games. While his career total of 251 victories is certainly impressive enough, it is other accomplishments that stand as testimonial to his greatness. In 1968, a career year for Gibson, he won both, NL MVP honors and the Cy Young award (by unanimous vote). Cardinal fans saw Gibson go 22-9 with a 1.12 ERA and 13 shutouts! The nine losses were hardly by a lack of effort. A weak Cardinals line-up with one .300 batter, five losses came on scores of 1-0, one loss was a no-hitter pitched by HoFer Gaylord Perry. In the 1964 and 1967 World Series, Gibson posted a 7-2 record and was voted World Series MVP in both years. During June and July of '68, Gibson pitched 47 consecutive scoreless innings, one of the longest scoreless streaks in MLB history; his 34 appearances included 28 complete games. Gibson was never removed from a game in 1968. He was taken out simply for the need of a pinch-hitter. The pitching mound was lowered in 1969, in large part due to Gibson's dominance. He was voted an All-Star nine times, matching that number in Gold Glove Awards plus a pair of Cy Young awards.Offered is one of the best Bob Gibson cards known in the hobby. The card is graded PSA Gem MT 10! From a total number of submissions currently at 649, this is the only example to earn the Gem MT honors. The card barely shows a hint of aging. Not a single flaw to the shiny layer of gloss, not a hint of fading to a single ink dot as well as a complete lack of wear at any corner tip. The condition critical full bleed name plate is beyond pure and seems to have never have been in contact with a human hand. The portrait is rendered with the utmost precision beaming with a three-dimensional quality as two dimensions are just not enough to contain the fiery grin and piercing eyes of one of the great mound kings of his era. A card once placed in its proper place of honor will probably never see the light of public auction again for the foreseeable future.
