Description

1939 Play Ball Ted Williams #92 Rookie SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. He entered the Majors intent upon a future in which baseball fans would point at him and whisper, "There goes the greatest hitter that ever lived." Twenty-one years later, he would retire with that wish fulfilled. It's a fact that makes the presented cardboard commemorative one of the most essential trading cards in the hobby, deriving from the most important issue released during the historic Baseball Centennial season.

Arguably there is no more important vintage in the entirety of a century and a half of professional baseball history, a year that saw the debut of Williams, the tearful farewell of Gehrig, and the ribbon-cutting of the Hall of Fame. But the better part of eight decades that have elapsed since the 1939 season has not laid a glove upon this nearly pristine relic.

Our most recent offering of this card in high-grade, a PSA Mint 9 representation, commanded a record $239,000 in November 2016, and the differences between that example and the one presented here are nearly imperceptible. With bold registration, clean surfaces and scarcely a hint of human contact, this is a card that will satisfy even the most discerning of high-end collectors.
