    1996 Atlanta Olympics Gold Medal Presented to American Swimmer Brooke Bennett. The first taste of Olympic Gold for sixteen-year old Bennett, who defeated swimming legend Janet Evans in her final competitive race to claim the 800 Meter Freestyle. Bennett's time of 8:27.89 was over two seconds faster than Silver Medalist Dagmar Hase of Germany, thrilling the hometown crowd at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

    Presented is the gleaming symbol of amateur sport's highest achievement, one of 637 Gold Medals produced for Atlanta, crafted from gilt silver and weighing 180 grams. Diameter is seventy milimeters (70mm). Seated victory holds a laurel wreath on obverse in front of the Colosseum. Verso features the Atlanta Games emblem and reports, "Centennial Olympic Games." Lower edge is engraved, "Women's 800m Freestyle." Original forest-green ribbon remains attached. One of three Bennett medals presented within this Signature auction.
