Nearly the entire known population of authentic representations!

1959 President John F. Kennedy Signed Checks Lot of 6. In a rather awkward bit of coincidence, the young Senator from Massachusetts found himself on a United Airlines flight to Chicago with the reigning Vice President Richard Nixon on July 11, 1959, the man he would successfully challenge for the White House a year later. Shortly before he left Washington, D.C. en route to his final destination of Seattle, Kennedy sat down and signed the six checks offered here, a lot that represents nearly the full population of known specimens. The seventh and final JFK check consigned to this auction will appear alone in the Final Session of this Platinum Night auction.

Their survival in the public sector is the result of a humble request made by a gentleman named Norman Knight nearly four years after Kennedy's tragic assassination just a few miles from the Heritage world headquarters. Knight had become a close friend of the charismatic leader through his tireless philanthropic work on behalf of a wide array of charities from the American Red Cross to the Boy Scouts of America. It would appear that Knight simply wanted a memento of his martyred compatriot.

There were originally twelve checks sent to Knight, as the original cover letter from the "Office of Joseph P. Kennedy" signed by the son of former Democratic Senator from Montana Thomas J. Walsh attests. An onion skin copy of Knight's letter of thanks, unsigned, is here as well. We have been informed that some of the five checks that are not present in this Platinum Night auction were secretarially signed, but each of the presented examples has been authenticated as the genuine article.

We stress that it is only the autograph at lower right that is in Kennedy's hand--the rest of the handwriting is that of his secretary. All signatures rate 8/10 to 9/10 in strength, and all checks exhibit clean storage folds, staple holes and bank stamping but no significant condition issues. An exciting opportunity for the advanced Presidential autograph collector to effectively corner the market on what is arguably the greatest post-war rarity of the genre. SGC Authentication.
