    Description

1932 Ellsworth Vines US Open Men's Singles Championship Trophy. One of the most significant pre-war tennis trophies ever to reach the hobby's auction block, this gorgeous and flawlessly preserved relic was Vines' victor's prize for his second consecutive (and final) U.S. Open Singles Championship. Vines left little doubt as to the validity of his World Number One ranking as he methodically picked apart seven-time Grand Slam Singles Champion Henri Jean Cochet of France with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory to claim American tennis' highest honor.

The double-armed cup is artfully engraved with the details of the victory, announcing "U.S.L.T.A., Lawn Tennis Championship of the United States, Mens Singles, West Side Tennis Club, 1932, Winner, H. Ellsworth Vines Jr." Underside of the base is stamped "Black, Starr & Frost, Gorham, 7661, Sterling 9 inches," the measurement relating to the height of the gleaming prize (technically 9.5"). The passing eight decades have been gentle to the trophy cup, leaving it absolutely unchanged from its state of condition as it was presented to the Champion at Forest Hills' West Side Country Club.

Considering the fact that Vines' 1932 season is widely considered his greatest, much like Babe Ruth's 1927, this is arguably the most significant artifact to derive from the incredible Ellsworth Vines Collection, and one of the most important tennis collectibles ever to reach the hobby's auction block.
