    Description

The first of two shoes worn by the greatest race horse of all time

1920 Man o' War Horseshoe Worn in Preakness Stakes Victory. The horse was purchased at a 1918 Saratoga yearling sale for $5,000 (the equivalent of $78,000 in 2015) by Samuel D. Riddle, a bargain price for a thoroughbred that would soon gain such a reputation for dominance that nearly a century later he reigns as the number one racehorse in history as ranked by Blood-Horse magazine, the Associated Press, and Sports Illustrated.

Few experts doubt that Man o' War would have claimed the Triple Crown in 1920, but his owner did not like racing in Kentucky and believed it was too early in the year for such a young horse to run a mile and quarter distance. The second leg of the fabled three-race series found Man o' War coasting to an easy first place finish, setting a Pimlico track record of 1:38.6 for a mile before his easy trot through the last eighth.

Presented is one of the horseshoes affixed to Man o' War's hoof as he dominated the Preakness field. It is one of two shoes from the greatest racing horse that ever lived on offer within this Platinum Night auction, each purchased at a Philadelphia antique market in the mid-1970's. An included 1996 letter of provenance explains that Philadelpia auctioneer Samuel T. Freeman had auctioned the contents of Glen Riddle Farm where Man o' War was trained.

The shoe is mounted onto an oval wooden plaque and affixed with a clearly vintage engraved plate reporting the details:

"Worn by Man o' War when he won the Preakness, Pimlico, Baltimore, MD in the month of May 1920."

Affixed to verso with yellowed cellophane tape is a handwritten piece of paper that reads:

"Shoes presented to John Matthews in 1932 from Glen Riddle Farms, later given to Matthews' brother in North Hills--Authenticated by Chick Lang, Pimlico, Baltimore, MD, Aug. 1974."

Lang, who passed away in 2010, was one of the most recognizable figures at Pimlico, a jockey agent, consultant, commentator, and general manager of the Maryland Jockey Club. His ashes are sprinkled in the winner's circle at Pimlico. Provenance as listed in auction text.
