The second of two shoes worn by the greatest race horse of all time
1920 Man o' War Horseshoe Worn in Belmont Stakes Victory.
After Man o' War's dominance at the Preakness, the speedy
thoroughbred was the odds-on favorite to conquer the Belmont field,
but few could have imagined just how authoritative that victory
would be. The margin of victory was a stunning twenty lengths, and
his winning time of 2:14.20 set an American record for the one and
three-eighths mile distance, more than three seconds quicker than
Sir Barton's time in the 1919 Belmont, which had completed the
first Triple Crown in history.Like the Preakness shoe that precedes this lot, the presented specimen traveled a path from the hoof of the most celebrated quadruped in American sports history, back to display within the trophy room of Glen Riddle Farm where Man 'o War was trained, sold at auction by Philadelphia auctioneer Samuel T. Freeman, and then sold again at a Philadelphia antique market. Once again, this trail of provenance is documented by a handwritten letter and by a second handwritten page affixed to reverse of the plaque, which reads:
"These shoes were given to John Matthews in 1932 by Glen Riddle Farms, later given to his brother in Dicth (sic) Hills. Authenticated by Chick Lang, Pimlico, Balt. MD, Aug. 1974."
The engraved plated below the shoe on obverse reports:
"Man o' War, Property of Glen Riddle Farm, Plate worn by Man o' War when he won the Belmont, 1920."
With nearly a century passed since Man o' War's prime, leading collectors of thoroughbred racing memorabilia have largely abandoned any hope of owning a relic from the top-ranked equine athlete of all time. Heritage is pleased to offer what we believe to be the only two Man o' War race worn items from Triple Crown victories ever to appear at auction since these shoes first emerged nearly four decades ago. Provenance as listed in auction text.
