    Description

1913 Pan Handle Scrap Duke Kahanamoku SGC 20 Fair 1.5. Best remembered today as "The Father of Surfing," this native Hawaiian first entered the public consciousness as the greatest swimmer the world had ever seen. In August 1911, at an amateur swim meet, Kahanamoku was timed at 55.4 seconds in the 100 yard freestyle, smashing the existing world record by over four and a half seconds. A year later he would claim the Gold Medal at the Stockholm Summer Olympics in the same event, and then repeat his domination eight years later at the Antwerp Games. This "rookie" card of Kahanamoku dates to 1913 and one of a precious few trading card appearances made by the talented athlete. The offered example presents much nicer than the technical grade would suggest. The card presents at the excellent level but has one horizontal crease at the hairline level which acts as a minor visual distraction.
