The last solid gold medal issued for Olympic competition

1912 Stockholm Summer Olympics Individual Gold Medal for Trap Shooting. There is a good reason for noting the "individual" distinction of this exceedingly rare Olympic victor's prize in our lot title, as medals issued to first place finishers at Stockholm came in two different formats. Those presented to members of winning teams were constructed of solid silver plated in gold, the manner of construction for all Gold Medals issued for Olympic competition ever since. Only the winners of individual competitions earned medals crafted from solid gold, assigning a distinction to this important relic worth far more than its twenty-four grams the precious metal.

Just ninety such solid Gold Medals were struck for the Games by Stockholm's "C.C. Sporrong & Co." mint, including two famously won by native American sports legend Jim Thorpe, and there's little doubt that many if not most have been melted down since. Thankfully the family of American trap shooter James Graham resisted that considerable temptation, allowing his great-granddaughter to consign this important artifact to this Platinum Night auction. Graham was likewise a member of the American Clay Pigeons team Gold Medalists, but we have confirmed that this is the solid gold individual award.

The laurel wreath crowning of a Victory figure holding a palm branch serves as the obverse design, while a herald proclaims the start of the Games beside a bust of Ling, founder of Swedish gymnastics, on verso. Weight is 24 grams. Diameter is thirty-three millimeters. Fine condition.
