    Description

Circa 1908 Horace Ramey Olympic Try Out Worn Jersey, Personal Diary and Original Photographs. One of several lots within this Platinum Night auction consigned by the family of American middle distance runner Horace Ramey, who ran for the American team in the 400 and 800 meter races. In the former, Ramey made it to semifinals, where he was eliminated by fellow American John Taylor, who would become the first black Olympic Gold Medalist at these Games.

Presented here is a lightweight wool cotton Chicago Athletic Association "Cherry Circle" jersey that was worn by Ramey during the 1908 Olympic tryouts. Exhibiting solid condition with a few holes and dye bleeding, it is matched to original images of Ramey at the events, which are also included in this lot. Also included is his thoroughly written personal diary from 1908. An amazingly historic read, it documents his trip to the London Olympics, travel in Europe and his return to the United States. Letter of provenance from family of Horace Ramey. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
