Description
1948 Marjorie Jackson Australian Olympic Team Jacket. One of the greatest Australian sprinters and Olympic champions in history, Marjorie Jackson (a.k.a. The Lithgow Flash) won every state and national title she competed for from 1950-54, seven Commonwealth gold medals, two Olympic gold medals at Helsinki in 1952, and set six individual world records. Later in life, she became the governor of South Australia. The artifact on offer here was produced for Jackson in anticipation of her qualifying for the London Games as a sixteen-year-old phenom. Despite failing to make the 1948 squad, Jackson shocked the sports world in 1949 when, as a seventeen-year-old, she defeated Fanny Blankers-Koen in both 100-yard and 100-meter races. Blankers-Koen had won four gold medals at the London Games and was considered the greatest woman athlete in the world at the time.
This heavy, long-sleeve green wool jacket sports wide lapels, three gold front buttons, three front pockets trimmed in gold, and gold trimmed sleeves. Best of all is the the oversized breast pocket which displays the "Australia" coat-of-arms and "Olympic Games 1948," all in intricate, multi-colored embroidery. On the interior of the jacket is sewn a cloth swatch which is stamped "4433 Jackson."
A "David Lack Pty Ltd, Melbourne" label resides in the collar and, except for some small and relatively insignificant holes in the fabric, the jacket is in spectacular condition and displays magnificently. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
