1948 London Summer Olympics Torch. After a twelve-year hiatus due to the Second World War, the Olympic Games resumed in 1948 in a rebuilding London. The intense scarcity of relics from this first post-war edition is no coincidence--the weakened economic climate earned the international competition the nickname "The Austerity Games," with no new venues constructed, and the athletes housed in existing accommodations rather than an Olympic village. Only 1,720 torches were produced, roughly half the figure for the 1936 Berlin Games, so Olympic collectors are sure to take notice of this rare opportunity.

Crafted from aluminum alloy in a design by Ralph Lavers, the torch features three sets of Olympic rings and text reading, "XIVth Olympiad 1948, Olympia to London, with thanks to the bearer" at the flame bowl. Minor wear is shown throughout. The ring at the top features a few divots. Length is approximately 16". This is only the second example of the 1948 London torch we have handled.
