1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics Gold Medal. The Games of the IX Olympiad in Amsterdam, Netherlands, were the first to be called the "Summer Olympics," first to light the Olympic Flame, first to institute the sixteen-day event schedule, and first to incorporate the "parade of nations" into the opening ceremonies.
This 1928 Olympic Games first place gold medal was designed by noted Florentine artist Giuseppe Cassioli and features a seated Victory holding laurel wreath and palm on obverse, and ancient Greek vase, Roman Coliseum, and victor carried by jubilant athletes with stadium in background on verso. It is composed of gilt silver (as are all post-1912 first place Olympic medals) and was minted at the government-owned Royal Dutch Mint (aka Rijk's Mint) in Utrecht. Stamped with a foundry mark to the rim, it measures fifty-five millimeters (55 mm) in diameter and weighs sixty-eight grams (68 g.).
Presenting in superb condition, with no visible oxidation or any significant distractions, it is one of only 254 gold medals which were minted for the 1928 Games, and only the fourth exemplar which has ever come up for public sale.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
