    Description

1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games Watch Fob Presented to Tommy Lown - Only Known Exemplar. Tommy Lown was a Golden Gloves 147-pound national champion who captained the United States Olympic Boxing Team at the Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928, where he fought as a welterweight.

The artifact offered here was consigned to us as a watch fob presented to Lown at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games. We have not had the opportunity to remove it from the shadowbox and examine it and it is not accompanied by any provenance confirming that it was in fact presented to Lown. However, it appears to be a fob (or perhaps a belt buckle) and we have no doubt that this a vintage piece that was only given to athletes at the 1928 Games.

The bronze colored metal fob (1.5x1.75") displays red and blue enamel, the U.S. Olympic shield at the center, and the text "American Olympic Team, Amsterdam 1928." It is attached to a vintage brown leather strap (or belt) and beautifully presented in a shadowbox frame (23.25x14.25") with two photographs (each 6x4" visible) of Lown. The inscription plate incorrectly spells his last name as "Lawn."

Olympic relics from this era, and the Amsterdam Games, are very collectible. The fact that this is the only known such exemplar makes it a particularly desirable offering and and should be of interest to the advanced Olympic collector or period boxing aficionado.
