    The Games narrowly avert death...

1906 Athens Summer Olympics Gold Medal. More than a century later, the debate rages on--legitimate Olympic Games, or well-intentioned imposter. With the tradition virtually dead following the infamous 1904 St. Louis Olympiad, passionate historians, businessmen, athletes & athletic personnel banded together to bring The Modern Olympic Games back to Athens in 1906. Though not adhering to the Olympic Committee's every-four-years policy, these Games were deemed necessary by many to revitalize what had been an unfortunate debacle in America.

At the time, the Athens event was considered a rousing success, inspiring competitors and financial backers from twenty nations to sign on for the London Olympics in 1908, saving a tradition that may have been lost without these Intermediary Games. Yet today, the 1906 Athens Games still await legitimacy in the eyes of the Olympic committee, which makes no mention of them on their official website. It is only through the acknowledgment of every major Olympic-related site, and the collecting community, that the essential history lives on.

This unique status supplies special intrigue to the offered medal, awarded eleven decades ago to a first -place finisher in the ancestral home of The Games. It is composed of gilt silver, with the French word for silver (ARGENT) stamped on its edge, as the prize was minted in Paris. Its design celebrates the great Olympic tradition (identical to the inaugural 1896 Olympic Games), depicting Zeus holding winged Victory on the obverse, and the legendary Acropolis and Parthenon on the reverse. Diameter is fifty millimeters (50mm.), weight sixty grams (60g.). Small hook has been affixed to top. Moderate wear evident, but aesthetics remain strong.
