Description
1999 Wizards of the Coast Pokémon Unlimited Base Set Uncut Proof Sheet with 110 Cards. Pokémon was first introduced in Japan during the mid-1990's and it quickly turned into a global phenomenon! Wizards of the Coast, which was already distributing an already highly popular card game known as "Magic: The Gathering," was able to get the approval from Nintendo and started distributing Pokémon cards in 1999. The original set known as the Base Set included a total of 102 cards, with the first 16 cards being holographic, and it included artwork from artists like Ken Sugimori and Mitsuhiro Arita just to name a couple.Pokémon has been highly popular from the beginning but the increase in prices in the last few years has been nothing short of amazing! PSA Gem Mint 10 cards, First Edition Booster Boxes, video games, basically anything Pokémon has been selling for record numbers. These pieces are not just becoming a "part" of large collections but centerpieces!
Offered here is a first for Heritage Auctions, an uncut Unlimited Base Set proof sheet! Did we mention that the sheet includes only holographic cards? Well, it does! The cards included are #'s 1-3, 4 (Charizard), 5-7 and 9-16, the only card missing is #8 Machamp. A total of 110 cards are on the sheet laid out in 11 rows with 10 cards per row. The word "proof" gets tossed around often when sellers are trying to make something more than deserved but this piece is a certified proof sheet. On the top left it reads "Okay for color & fit. 11-18-99 2:43pm Jeanne Maddox", Ms. Maddox was the Production Director for Wizards of the Coast at the time. The sheet measures 26 ½" x 39 ¼".
There are other uncut sheets in the market. Exactly how many is hard to say but they come up for auction extremely rarely. The "proof" status here establishes the offered sheet as one of the very earliest of US edition Pokémon cards! Overall near-mint with no creasing. Any wear is at an edge and not affecting cards.
