1973 Topps Wacky Packages Stickers - Series 1 Wax Box With 48
Unopened Packs! Topps had a history of taking advantage of pop
culture dating back to the 1950's. One can collect cards of dozens
of different movie or television shows including such manias as the
Beatles, Batman, the Monkees, etc., etc. They also create the
mania. The first Wacky Packages series appeared in 1967 but didn't
really catch the eye of the late-1960's gum chewing card
collectors. It wasn't until 1973 that Wacky Packages caught the
rebellious attention of a generation who seemed to relish the
thought of comedic and sometimes mean spirited (call it edgy
comedy) parodies of everyday consumer products. Controversial at
times but they were mainly funny, goofy and yes, dare we say it,
wacky! And of course they had to be stickers that could be mounted
on any visible flat surface a kid could think of. By the time Wacky
Packages-mania had begun to settle, Topps had issued 16 series from
1973 through 1977 alone. Certain stickers rubbed corporations wrong
more than others. Morton Salt filed a lawsuit against eBay over the
"Moron Salt" sticker in 2003... still fuming after more than 25
years.Offered is an incredible rarity and what can be considered the holy grail for the Wacky Packages aficionado - a complete wax box of 1973 Topps Wacky Packages - Series 1 with 48 unopened packs! We asked hobby wax pack/box expert Steve Hart of the Baseball Card Exchange for his opinion and he conveyed to Heritage Auctions that "This is the first one (wax box) known to have come to the market for sale or auction!" Furthermore, he confirmed PSA has graded only one pack from this series and the last sale of just a single pack he is aware of occurred in 2012.
Our offered box is possibly unique and contains all 48 packs and shows some dimpling to the top panel at diecut/perforation. He described the interior packs as NM to NM-MT. The packs were authenticated by Mr. Hart and the box comes sealed in the BBCE wrapper.
