1931 W-Unc Jim Thorpe (Green) SGC Poor 1 - Only Three Graded by SGC! Jim Thorpe wasn't just one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. The Native American track star and baseball players enjoyed a lengthy career on the silver screen, appearing in over 70 films, often as a Native American. He established a casting company which fought for how Native Americans were portrayed in films.Universal Studios produced a 12-part serial in 1931 called Battling with Buffalo Bill. Thorpe was cast as Swift Arrow in the final four episodes. That same year, the Exhibit Supply Co. produced a now rare set of cards featuring stars and scenes from the Battling With Buffalo Bill, Thorpe is featured on two of the cards. One card show Thorpe with William Desmond and actor Chief Thundercloud, the other is this portrait of Thorpe in an Indian headdress. The cards can be found with at least five different background colors.
Our offered card is not the post card sized Exhibit card but an even more rare paper version catalogued as W-Unc. To date, the card has been found with a green backdrop surrounding the same Exhibit portrait and no others. The card measures 1-5/8" x 2-3/4." Graded SGC Poor 1 (Hand Cut). Only one is recorded with its original tab. There are only two hand cut examples confirmed on the SGC census report without tabs. This is the nicer of the two.
