    Description

Unpublished 1962 Topps "Civil War News" Original Artwork. Offered is this unique piece of original art created for the landmark 1962 Topps "Civil War News" series. The 7" x 5-1/5" piece of illustration board boasts a central 5-1/4" x 3-3/4" painting titled "Campfire Scene" (Confederate) and the number 100 in a circle. Could this be what they intended for card #100 in the set had Topps not capped the set off at 87 cards plus a checklist? The noted creative directions would likely confirm that the art is a collaboration of Norm Saunders and Topps staff artist Maurice Blumenthal. Not the typical scene one would expect considering the often explosive and violent scenes that makes this production both insightful and so incredibly fun to collect. Other than some minor soiling in the outer border areas, the calm atmosphere of a night's meal has remained vibrant and fresh and no surface marring. The back offers a bit of levity possibly in the hand of Saunders or Blumenthal: "Would you like yours hard-boiled or sunny-side up?"
