    Description

1962 Topps "Civil War News" Original Art by Saunders/Blumenfeld - An Unused Scene. Offered is a rare piece of original artwork intended for the 1962 Topps "Civil War News" series. Collectors were so lucky to have cards with such quality from both Bowman in the 1950's and then Topps in the early-mid sixties. The main "Civil War News" artist was the great Norm Saunders. While credited with most cards research has revealed another member of the Topps art staff contributed including Maurice Blumenfeld. The beautifully rendered scene is titled "Campfire Scene (Confederate)." There is a circled "100" in the lower left which possibly suggests this was meant to card #100. The set stopped at 88-cards leaving our camp scene unpublished. The central image measures 5-1/4" x 3-3/4" on a 5-1/2" x 7" piece of illustration board. The perimeter has crop and trim marks along with creative editorial notes. The art is in great condition and color quality is bright and fresh. On the back, there is some surface evidence of a lost protective cover sheet along with, "Would You Like Yours Hard Boiled or Sunny-Side up?" We like to think this is some levity shared between Mr. Saunders and Mr. Blumenfeld.
