    Description

1964 Bubbles (Topps) "The Outer Limits" Near Set (47/50). Topps reserved the use of their "Bubbles, Inc." imprint for sets that they felt could be viewed as controversial by the parents of America. This tradition began with their "Elvis Presley" set for 1956, continued with their "Mars Attacks" release in 1962, and ended with their "Monsters of Outer Limits" set in 1964. "Outer Limits" stands as the final Bubbles, Inc. offering. It is also believed to be the very last non-sport set to be distributed in both nickel and penny packs. As classic a set as either of its two earlier siblings, "Outer Limits" incorporates black-and-white photo imagery from the popular TV show that was given a brilliant hand-colored treatment by the Topps art staff that relied on glowing, eye-grabbing, hot pastels. Every image was framed within fragile black borders that have driven condition-conscious collectors crazy ever since. As a result, the set's strongly appealing look is unique among all the sets ever to see production, and single prints of some numbers make it one of the tougher sets to complete. Missing #'s 12, 13 and 19. Grades 23% EX to EX+, 61% VG to VG/EX, 16% lesser.
