1938 Gum Inc. Collectors Set 240 Horrors of War Cards Complete First Run In Original Display Box! This is a rare opportunity to acquire this classic edition in its most pure and original state! Offered is a "240 Horrors of War Cards" Collectors Set with the original gift box and inner trays! Existence of sets like this defy the rules of logic and common sense. This box set is believed to the introduction to the public and includes the first 240 cards of the 288-card epic production for the then princely sum of $1.00. The "Horrors of War" cards went a long way in getting Gum Inc. cards into the homes of children across the United States. The set dominates the senses via some of the most graphic illustrations ever used for the gum card market. Their seemingly fantastic depictions make one take a step back upon the realization this is no phony propaganda push, the spine chilling fact is each is based on an actual event presenting accurate narrative of the corresponding scene. The 20x10-1/2" outer box has some minor wear, a paper label adhered to the top identifies the contents with a 16-card teaser of what was to come. The inside has two thin-card stock trays that held the card "packs" in place (modern plastic liner has been added for stability, not that it needs any). There are twenty-four groups of cellophane wrapped cards. Twenty groups are securely wrapped in cello and the cards are as they were when first placed inside back in 1938 - the same year Superman debuted in Action Comics in June, 1938. The cards themselves are real and they are spectacular! Glorious colors and pristine surfaces throughout. There are four cello "packs" that have opened revealing a wonderful trip back in time reminding us what untouched cards from the 1938 can look like. One card in each has some adhesive stain on the reverse, the others grade EX to NM/MT based almost 100% due to centering guidelines of modern grading services. We can assume the wrapped cards will generate the same quality. It almost seems a shame this set may very well be opened and separated after surviving the last 76 years intact.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
