1889 G54 Duke Sons & Co. "Yacht Clubs of the World" (N91) Tobacco Banner. What certainly must have been one of the more esoteric tobacco card promotions were the "Yacht Colors of the World" cards issued by W. Duke, Sons & Co. in 1889. The set is just one of a selection of Duke trading card sets that were meant to appeal to the upper class and the blue-collar smoking class with dreams of earning the American dream of wealth, prosperity and an easier life. The nautical theme is vividly depicted via 52 cards representing different sailing clubs around the world. Supporting artwork includes delicate gold metallic decoration and a large and striking portrait of a young female sailor along the port side of the rare poster with a colorful and large "Yacht Club Colors of the World" on the starboard side. The stern alerts consumers to the fact that the cards can be found in packs of "Duke's Cameo Cigarettes" and a large yacht cutting through the waves leaving dreams of feeling the sea air in your face. Historical fact: Yacht racing can be traced back to England to the 1600's and was popular among European royalty.
