1888 G8-3 Allen & Ginter "Flags of All Nations" (N9) Tobacco Banner....
Description
1888 G8-3 Allen & Ginter "Flags of All Nations" (N9) Tobacco Banner. In addition to Allen & Ginter, another common name found among 19th century tobacco advertising banners is the name "Geo. S. Harris & Sons" who are the lithographers of credit for so many of the insert card promotions of the era. Based in Philadelphia, they produced these banners for tobacco companies in such grand style and quality we wonder if they felt these now coveted paper treasures would be used for years and years to come. From 1888 we have this stunner produced for Allen & Ginter's Virginia Brights Cigarettes title "Flags of All Nations." Knowing the key is to visually grab the consumers attention it was a logical selection to use Old Glory of the centerpiece of a display that include the images of all forty-eight of the flags finding their way onto a card in the what the American Card Catalog designated N9 "Flags of All Nations." It is obvious there was an immense sense of pride and success this promotion would be as it is one of the few promoted as a "Series 1" as printed on the back of every card. One can't say enough regarding how incredible the artwork and print quality one experiences with this mini masterpiece of art which also described the cards themselves, so just imagine the need to take a step back and catch your breath when one sees them all in one place. There is an elevated amount of creasing and edge chipping affecting edges mainly seen across the top portion. Two tears are seen in the lower right corner. Colors are bold and vivid with Old Glory standing out beautifully. You truly don't know where to look first. Viewable area is 15" x 21" and 19" x 25" overall with matting and framing under plexiglass.Guide Value or Estimate: $3,000 - up.
