Incredibly Rare 1916 (D381) Ferguson Bakery Movie Stars Pillow Top Premium. Today, coupons are saved and exchanged for a discounted price. A century ago, coupons meant premiums. Many commonly bought commodities came via coupon redemption programs. Depending on what one used or smoked there was a huge number of choices from collectibles to house-hold items. In 1916, buyers of "Peerless Bread," a product of Ferguson's Bakery found a baseball card inserted into their loaves of bread. The cards came with coupons along the bottom which are now almost impossible to find. For fifty coupons, one would receive an as advertised "Beautiful Felt Pillow Top made from Star Base-ball Player Pennants or Favorite Movie Actor Pennants." It then explained, "This photo card was wrapped with Peerless Bread, "Perfect for the Home Plate." That meant if you wanted on of these now close to one-of-a-kind pillow topper premiums one needed to buy and consume 50 loaves of bread.

The pennants used for the premiums are not the run-of-the-mill BF2 variety. They are larger (6-1/2") with more elaborate decoration. The subjects are a who-is-who of the silent film era. The dates include: Connelly, Fenwick, Santsch, C. K. Young, Harron/Brown, Grandin, Harron/Pink, K. Williams, E. Williams, Stewart, Rawlinson and Anderson. The pennants and pillow base/fringe are overall, in excellent-mint to near-mint condition. There is surface wear to some of the fringe pieces but no rips or tearing to be found. Each delicate photo has creasing. A few have small corner pieces missing and two have some tears. The approx. 23 x 23" rich, deep blue/maroon premium is ready for hanging and immediate appreciation inside a 2" deep shadowbox. Overall size is 29" x 29." This is just one of three of these pillow top premiums we are aware of and the only one featuring the Movie Actors! Two of those three known are being offered in this auction!

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
