Circa 1959 Chix Confectionery "Popeye Card Chewing Gum" Display Box and Five Paper Pouch Packs. "Popeye, the Sailor Man" made his debut in the late 1920's in a comic titled Thimble Theatre and his appeal only grew from there. The spinach eatin' sailor, Olive Oyl and of course Wimpy soon saw their likenesses on a multitude of endorsements but none more popular than on trading cards. As the cards are very similar to the Ad-Trix Corp. set, we can assume this English 50-card production was released right around 1959 as well for the English market. Their origin aside, in the USA, this set remains of the more desirable Popeye themed card editions. The scarce 8-1/2' x 8-1/2" x 3-1/2" two-color box presents at the excellent level with some minor tap stains. The five "packs" are actually min-paper bags that have no adhesive to seal them. Two bags have tears, all five have six-card still inside; three have the original bubble gum. Cards are "pack fresh" and in EX-MT to NM/MT condition with a few some exceptions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
