1940's Unissued V-Gum & Horrors of War Original Art Pair From the Charles Steinbacher Collection. Offered is a pair of original art once part of the Charles Steinbacher archive. Mr. Steinbacher was the art director for the Gum, Inc., account during his years at the George Moll Advertising Agency and is famous for his work producing a number the classic Non-Sports card issues we so passionately collect. The pair includes: 1) Artwork for card #41 "Chinese Victims of War" from the Horrors of War series done in color pencil, water color and gouache. The piece measures 3-1/16" x 2-7/16" with Steinbacher ownership stamp on the verso; and 2) In the style of the R164 War Gum series is this piece of unissued original art for a proposed 48-card set to be called "V-Men" for the Canadian and English markets. We have learned each card was to feature a prominent figure with a war scene in the background. The caption box has been lost to history but based on the graphics and military uniform we can strongly suggest it is Douglas Ritchie aka "Colonel Britton" who was the radio voice for the BBC who communicated with millions giving them hope for the future and to boost public moral. It is believed there were only 24 pieces of original art from this promotion in the Steinbacher collection. There is a wax paper (now brittle w/tape) overlay with color pencil added for final color notes. There is some adhesive staining affecting the art but remember, this is one-of-a-kind art.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
