1991 Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Race Worn & Signed Fire Suit.

UPDATE: This item has a Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

It's hard to believe it's been nearly twenty years since a devastating crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 robbed stock car racing of its most celebrated star, but that star has only continued to rise in his memory. Race worn material from Dale, Sr. remains among the most coveted in the NASCAR collecting world, and here we present one of the finest such artifacts, a fire suit worn in competition during The Intimidator's 1991 Winston Cup Championship season, inclusive of the Hardee's 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway where the legendary driver was presented his Championship trophy.

A spectacular image of Earnhardt hoisting the massive hardware above his head finds him adorned in a nearly identical fire suit, each and every patch and embroidered design feature applied identically to Getty Image #83547434, however it differs in a couple minor regards. Race wear is marvelous, the fabric heavily pilled at every location where the suit came in contact with the seat or safety harnessing, while every patch has been rendered smooth and soft through the numerous cycles of sweat immersion and laundering. This is, quite simply, a perfect specimen.

The final cherry comes in the form of a bold black sharpie signature at upper left chest. A letter of provenance from our consignor speaks of the garment's history:

"My family has been around the racing business for most of my childhood. My mother was Bill Elliot's fan club director for most of the 1980's and early 1990's. In Michigan, there was a Boy Scout auction and in that auction was this fire suit worn and autographed by Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Bill Elliot was also in attendance of this auction. He purchased the suit as a gift to my mother for the work she did as his fan club president. It has been in our family ever since."

This season would provide Earnhardt's fifth of seven NASCAR Championships. As such, it can be counted among the most important and desirable articles of stock car racing we have presented to the collecting public. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Letter of provenance from consignor. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
