1984 Rusty Wallace Race Worn NASCAR Driving Suit from Rookie Year. While Rusty Wallace had a few NASCAR races already under his belt, 1984 was his first year with a full-time ride for the entire season. Driving the Gatorade car, Rusty soon began to leave his mark in stock car's highest level for the next 21 years. He was named NASCAR's Rookie of the Year for his accomplishments.
To cite just a few of his milestones: Winston Cup Series Champion in 1989, winner of 55 Winston Cup races with 349 Top Ten finishes, a member of almost every motor racing hall of fame that's out there, named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers and winner of the 1991 IROC Series.
On the auction block is Rusty's 1984 Gatorade Nomex driving suit from that debut season. Made by Simpson, it has a 2/84 year tag in the collar. Shows moderate wear. (From photo comparisons from '84 you can see where the "Winston Cup drivers patch" was removed below 'Gatorade' on the front and replaced with the Modine patch.) Several similar photos can be found that show Wallace in this suit without the Pontiac patch which is high up on the right side. (With the exception of the "Gatorades," the Goodyear and his name which are directly Swiss embroidered, everything else is comprised of sewn on patches which was the norm for the era.)
